Steelers/Raiders Week 16 1984

12 months after Pittsburgh got blasted in the playoffs at the LA Coliseum, the men of steel returned the favor in a game that had implications for both teams

The Steelers needed a win to avoid a monumental AFC Central collapse that would have made 8-8 Cincinnati a division winner

The Raiders with a win would have hosted Seattle in the AFC Wild Card Game (a team they had also crushed at the LA Coliseum in January and had beaten earlier that season in LA)

Instead, PIT held LA to 57 yards rushing and allowed 0 points until the 4th quarter in a 13-7 game where PIT was a 6.5 point underdog

Eagles played the Cardinals Week 1 of 1948. Cardinals won by 7 but tragically Cardinal Stan Mauldin died after the game.

Two other games, not rematches of league championships but are kind of fit within the topic.

Colts at Packers Week 1 of 1966 after the famous Don Chandler field goal to send the 1965 Western Division Playoff into overtime. Packers won the rematch 24-3.

Browns vs Eagles to start 1950 - although not a rematch, it was the two league champions.

This year marks the fourth year in a row that the Eagles & Chiefs played each other, 5-in-4 years if they play again in this year's (rubber-band) Super Bowl. What a way to 'make up' for that twenty year gap of they not playing each other from '72 to '92 (with no first meeting in Philly until '98)! Even if both play again in the Super Bowl this February, It still wouldn't be as condensed as Lions/Browns playing each other 5 times in three seasons from '52-thru-'54 (7-in-6, if you extend it thru '57). And nothing tops Bears/Redskins, '37-thru-'43, when it comes to inter-conference rivalries!

Can one who yearns for '70s NFL even think to possibly put nostalgia aside and actually, just maybe, place Eagles/Chiefs above...Steelers/Cowboys?Especially if they do get that rubber-band SB match which Pit/Dal didn't have? Lions/Browns no rubber-band LCG either.
