Paul Brown's first act with the Bengals was to give Miami his #1 and #2 picks for John Stofa. That was a thing back then, trade for a backup QB and make him your starter. Gary Cuozzo was traded for high draft choices (plus Bill Curry and John Gilliam) by the Colts, Saints, and Vikings in succession.

Nice article below...

https://www.espn.com/blog/buffalo-bills ... ounterpart

In addition to defending Peterman, McQuilken makes a pretty good point in that he wouldn’t have lasted 7 years in the NFL if he was...the “worst” QB. As the article states, Kim played under four HCs as well as four OCs. When Swamp Fox got fired in midst of ’76 season, Atl’s GM actually took over as HC handing over the offensive game plan to Kim being that most of the offensive assistants followed Campbell out the door.

Dick Shiner comes to mind. In 1967, Shiner was Frank Ryan's backup QB at Cleveland when they had to trade away Jim Ninowski who did not show up in training camp. Ryan was battered and bruised through much of the season, but the Browns continued to play him hurt rather than start Shiner. I think that Ninowski would have gotten a lot of playing time in 1967 if he was still at Cleveland.

Of course, Shiner and others here did play in the NFL or AFL, and most people like myself could not come close to making an NFL team even as a backup anything. Those guys had to have some talent just to play pro football, even as a marginal player.

For guys who actually spent a decent time as starters, I think Pete Beathard is in the running -- and maybe leading the field.

Pete Liske lost his only start as a youngster for the 1964 Jets. He came up to Canada in 1965 and, after two so-so seasons, one with Toronto and Calgary, he lit the league up in 1967 and 68 with the Stampeders, breaking yardage and TD pass records and winning the Most Outstanding Player award in 1967.

He then signed with Denver before the 1969 season. In four years of mostly part-time play with the Broncos and Eagles he went 13-14-1 with bad teams. He helped the 1971 Eagles to a 6-7-1 record after an 0-5 start. He also went 2-4-1 for the 2-11-1 1972 Eagles.

Bottom line? He wasn’t bad.

I was at the game in 1950 when Tom O'Malley of the Packers attempted 15 passes, 4 of which were completed and 6 of which were intercepted.

I feel like there should be a baseline set. Wouldn't a guy who spent 12 games on a practice squad and 2-4 as third string QB, but never got into a game, be considered worse than some of the players named?

If we limit this to guys who received substantial playing time, as we should, Jim Ninowski should be somewhere close to the “top” five. I know he had a strong arm but his stats were consistently bad.

We could do that. What category would, say, Peterman belong in? The nominations so far are good though, keep them coming.
