Ferguson was actually released late in the season.
All this time I thought he was released during the offseason of 84-85. I guess by November of the disaster that 1984 was they realized a clean slate was needed. Not that 85 was much better QB play wise. Ferragamo showed a faint glimmer in an early game or 2 IIRC. He played decently in the 14-9 loss to the Chargers.

Then when Joe Ferguson signed with the Detroit Lions? I remember him being destroyed by the Chicago Bears defense in the last game of the season, with William Perry returning a fumble for big yardage before being caught from behind.

You were right, Chris. I opened up Sal Maiorana's book and Ferguson was traded to Detroit for a future draft choice on the day of the 1985 draft. I had misremembered Ferguson's benching for his release. It was Ferragamo who was released late in the (1985) season.
