Bill Austin succeeded Vince Lombardi as the head coach of the Redskins (Lombardi appointed him interim coach) in 1970 when Lombardi became ill and then died of cancer. Austin was dismissed after a 6-8 season and was replaced by George Allen.
Austin came back to the Redskins in 1973 as offensive line coach under Allen.

Allen got fired by the Rams three times. The 1st time Christmas Week 1968. Notable stars like Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Roman Gabriel, Jack Snow, etc protested and Dan Reeves hired George Allen back.
