There were a couple other guys of note: Ben Bradlee was City Editor, Barry Gotterher wrote Sports and went on to legendary status as an aide to Mayor John Lindsay, Jimmy Breslin was on contract for one or two stories a month. Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn't.)

Yes, Wikipedia says he was class of 1955 at Cornell, so I missed him by a year. My one year of playing lacrosse was in the spring of 1956, my freshman year.

Spring of 1956 would have been JB's Junior year. How many of that 20 were his?
Boston LAX Club? Mostly Harvard grads, I imagine - maybe a few from Tufts?
