In my previous post I was going to add that we'll probably find out, sometime in the future, that those annoying little pellets cause cancer. The future came more quickly than I expected.

Way back in the day they'd actually purposely set patches of the field on fire using kerosene. It was a way to burn ice, snow, or water off the field. Looking at it from a 21st Century perspective that tactic seems awfully risky. Of course this was an era when fans would light bonfires in the stands to keep warm.
