'96 Jaguars VS '96 Panthers
Who do you all think is best between these evenly matched (despite their records) 2nd year expansion squads and why?

Interestingly they did actually play each other early that year with the Jags winning 24-14. Both teams really started to gel down the stretch. Specifically Jags on offense and Panthers on defense. In a hypothetical Super Bowl between the two I don't think the Jaguars would have had a chance. I think the Panthers pass rush would have been too much to handle. I remember them being scary-good.

Very good blitz Carolina had but Taylor, Natrone, and a mobile Brunell keeps that at bay IMO. Jags by at least 7 (likely more) had both actually met that January. There was nothing at all special about that Kerry-led Panther O; depended on starting off with good field position in order to score. They beat an Irvin-less downward-spiraling Cowboy squad. Once that '96 post-season began, the Jags were pretty solid. They gave Pats a good 3 quarters until the "new and exciting" clinching playoffs and beating Bills/Broncos suddenly wore off. But they did arrive; did not 'let-down' in '97. The fact that the Jags became a regular playoff team those next few years gives them some extra for this argument. Last, Coughlin over Capers in the HC department.

Who's Taylor? Fred Taylor wasn't drafted until 1998.74_75_78_79_ wrote:Very good blitz Carolina had but Taylor, Natrone, and a mobile Brunell keeps that at bay IMO.

Hey, we can make it the Jaguars all-time team vs. the '96 Panthers. That way Maurice Jones-Drew can get in on some downs too.

I think the Jaguars' all-time team would be the 1999 Jaguars with Stroud and Henderson at DT, and Jones Drew replacing Stewart as the backup RB.ChrisBabcock wrote:Hey, we can make it the Jaguars all-time team vs. the '96 Panthers. That way Maurice Jones-Drew can get in on some downs too.
