1959 NFL Championship

Post by Jay Z »

I want some opinions on this game. I've never even seen the highlight film, heard a radio broadcast, or seen the play by play. I know the Giants led 9-7 after three quarters, so the game was close most of the way. Any opinions on the game, the general quality of play?

The Colts had already started their go-ahead drive when the fourth quarter started. but Charlie Conerly's horrible fourth quarter were responsible for quickly putting the game out of reach. Conerly was picked off, with the Colts starting a drive at the Giants 15, which they converted in two plays to make it 21-9. Then Johnny Sample had a pick-six to make it 28-7, and was in the right place again on the subsequent drive, picking the ball off at midfield and bringing it back to the Giant 26. Baltimore got a FG out of it, with the Giants picking up a garbage touchdown in the final minute.

I think Don Kellett of the Colts described the game as "we didn't win easily, but we won convincingly."
