'90s Jags

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

I'm sorry. I know enough HOF threads have been hitting this forum as of late, but who OF those early Jacksonville playoff squads should get in the Hall if any of them at all? Perhaps they'll forever be boxed out due to no SB berths (getting swept 3-0 by technical underdog Titans in '99) but I guess you never know. I mean who can forget BOSS's performance vs Bruce in that 1st round matchup at favored Rich Stadium in '96 (and everyone talks about the Denver upset instead)? Another purpose for this thread is also to simply just...'talk' about that very era as evidenced in my title of this thread (leaving out the words, "Hall of Fame", altogether).

Also, perhaps this may instigate there to be a new (strictly) 'HOF' section of these forums.

Of course if he does make it, it'll be due to his 'Gene Tunney'-esque role in NFL lore elsewhere, but Tom Coughlin will make the Hall as well...right?

Boselli definitely manhandled Bruce in that playoff game! Is he HOF worthy? hmmm.... (I very nearly typed something about career not long enough) ;) I wouldn't be opposed to him getting inducted. I wouldn't cry if he weren't either. There's been some talk of Jimmy Smith. No way. Coughlin is borderline. Probably not.

With a 7-year career, Tony Boselli will need a Gale Sayers exception despite a 3/5/90s profile. I wouldn't bet the rent on it.

Tom Coughlin has 2 Super Bowl wins and a current W-L record of 164-140. In combination, that's probably enough.

Doubt it:

Tom Flores: Two Super Bowl wins and a 97-87 record.
George Seifert: Two Super Bowl wins and a 114-62 record.

The win percentage isn't better than either, but the sheer number of wins may make up for that.

Seifert really gets disrespected as a coach. Some have speculated that his years coaching the Panthers is what is keeping him out of the hall. I'm not sure he's a HOF'er but he doesn't seem to come up for discussion.

Part of the perception problem may be that Seifert was handed an excellent team upon Walsh's retirement and expected not to foul up. It"s hard to get due credit for your efforts under those circumstances

Flores has double the Super Bowl wins of his predecessor, Hall of Famer John Madden. Without the broadcasting component, Madden would undoubtedly not have been in consideration.

It may have helped, but Flores is at 97-87 (.527 win percentage) while Madden is at 103-32 (.759). That's a huge difference that one extra Super Bowl win won't likely make up for.
