Unanimously the strongest of Lombardi's squads against a Miami team that I steadfastly (sure many of you also) place noticeably ahead of the forever heralded (and, yes, deservingly so; can't scoff at undefeated) '72 installment.
Who prevails in this "pick-the-under" dogfight between two of the greatest teams ever assembled (especially pre-'78)?

I would go with the '73 Dolphins, simply because the Pack still hadn't won a title before then, while the Dolphins were coming off a perfect season and a conference-winning season the year before that.74_75_78_79_ wrote:Unanimously the strongest of Lombardi's squads against a Miami team that I steadfastly (sure many of you also) place noticeably ahead of the forever heralded (and, yes, deservingly so; can't scoff at undefeated) '72 installment.

Realistically, the Fins should have been 13-1. Their 12/9 loss to the Colts (16-3) was after they had clinched the division, and with no home field advantage to worry about, they put in a ho-hum effort. Marlin Briscoe could have gotten them off to a quick start, but he dropped a pass in the end zone during the first drive. Then Yepremian missed a 42-yard FG. The Colts definitely had a "try anything" mentality that day--on their clinching TD, they went for it on fourth down FOUR times.

'73 Dolphins because of the caliber of competition they went up against- Raiders, Steelers, Bengals, Cowboys, Vikings, Bills (the year OJ ran for 2,000).
Other than the Eagles and Giants, were there any other good teams in '61 besides the Pack?

I don't think the 1961 Packers were the best of Lombardi's teams at all. The 1962 team was clearly better, as far as I can see.

Yes. The better comparison might be the '62 Packers VS '73 Dolphins.Bob Gill wrote:I don't think the 1961 Packers were the best of Lombardi's teams at all. The 1962 team was clearly better, as far as I can see.

Oops, that's what I meant, actually. Just changed the title.SixtiesFan wrote:Yes. The better comparison might be the '62 Packers VS '73 Dolphins.Bob Gill wrote:I don't think the 1961 Packers were the best of Lombardi's teams at all. The 1962 team was clearly better, as far as I can see.
It's quite tough to decide. Both super strong run games and defenses and rather smart QBs. Warfield would have to give '73 Phins the nod in the passing game. Special teams? Who gets that edge?
