1980-83 Raiders, 2 wins in 4 years or at the bump of eras
the 1980 Raiders won with the 1970s team with Plunkett. 1981, as noted, they got old and by 1982 is was a revived team. In 1983 they win it all
but, like the mid-1980 Bears they could be called underachievers, UNLESS the 1980 win that Plunkett, Branch, Millen, Hayes, Hendricks is part of the "1980s" Raiders. To me, it's a to-close-too call . . .
IMO the Raiders underachieved in 1984 and 1985 but they did have big qb issues. The 1985 Bears were super bowl quality defense through 1988 and super bowl quality o-line to about same time. Again, consistensy at QB was at issue.

Al Davis' overconfidence probably didn't help, considering he was saying in '84, that he could see a dynasty developing, since "I don't know what it lacks."

Its interesting how, from a statistical perspective, the 1983 Raiders defensive performance in the Super Bowl has to be one of the more remarkable feats in NFL history. No one had really stopped the Redskins offense in the past two seasons, and the Raiders defense in 1983 wasn't great statistically, but they completely stonewalled the Redskins in SB XVIII. Washington couldn't run, couldn't pass, were dominated at the line of scrimmage, and nearly outscored by Jack Squirek.JohnTurney wrote:IMO the Raiders underachieved in 1984
To follow that up the next season by being literally run out of the playoffs by the likes of Dan Doornink and David Hughes (Dave Krieg completed all of 4 passes on the day) is a huge disappointment for the Raiders.

IMO the 1983 Raiders are horribly underrated. Too much emphasis on statistics. From the standpoint of one contest the team could whip anyone, which is what happened in the SB. That said, the Redskins just shanked one in the water that day. It happens.

The 1983 Raiders were a streaky team: they won their first four games, then lost three of their next five, before running off five more wins. They then inexplicably lost at home to a mediocre Cardinals team before getting back on track with a 16-point win over the Chargers to head into the postseason, where they rolled.mwald wrote:IMO the 1983 Raiders are horribly underrated. I agree with the comment about the emphasis placed on statistics.
Besides the Cardinals game that Sullivan mentioned, the Seahawks were the only other team to have a winning record (2-1) against the '83 Raiders. Those three games combined had some truly terrible QB play from all 4 QB's (2 each), that mixed with two playmaking/opportunistic defenses led to three odd, turnover filled, defensive (but points on the board) games between the teams.

I don't think 1984 was an underachieving year- they just got pulled down in an insanely competitive AFC West (swept by Denver, split with Seahawks, had some narrow escapes against the Chiefs and Chargers).
The '84 Raiders are remembered for an epic win (Miami) and a statement game they were on the wrong end of (Chicago, a game some consider among the most violent in NFL history)

I don't know who is underrating the 1983 Raiders. Many people think the 83 Raiders were the best Raider team ever, even better than the 76 Raiders. They made the NFL Films America's Game top 20 list.mwald wrote:IMO the 1983 Raiders are horribly underrated. Too much emphasis on statistics.

Well...ESPN ranked them 27th among all Super Bowl Champions, Fox Sports did not include them in their top 10 (but ranked the '76 team 9th), just to name two.Bryan wrote:I don't know who is underrating the 1983 Raiders. Say what you will about ESPN or Fox but their opinion is no more or less valid than any writer, producer or historian.

I don't think excluding the 1983 Raiders from the top 10 Super Bowl champions list qualifies as "horribly underrating" them. If you have them in your top 10 list, I'd like to see the list. ESPN ranking them #27 it probably a bit low, but consider the source.mwald wrote:Fox Sports did not include them in their top 10 (but ranked the '76 team 9th), just to name two.
