1972 All-Rookie Team

Post by TodMaher »

A former player (Bubba Pena) emailed asking me which All-Rookie team he was named to in 1972.
Does anyone have this info?

There was a Robert Bubba Pena from Falmouth who played a year or two with the Browns (I think.)
Yes; he is listed as one season - 7 games - with the Browns.
The Pro Reference thing shows Lawrence as his school. That is NOT Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Lawrence HS was the name of the HS in Falmouth, Massachusetts which is a town on the Cape.
I am quite sure Bobby is also in the FHS Hall of Fame?

EDITED TO ADD:

it wasn't UPI or Pro Football Weekly. PFWA didn't getin until 1974 . .. so the only two I know of for that season were UPI and PFW. And he's not listed on either.

It doesn't appear he was on any All-Rookie teams. Midway through the season he strained his knee and was put on the cab squad before undergoing knee surgery in late November. Also:

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer, 6/14/73

"Pena was a starter opening last season, but didn't do as well as expected. There was a shuffling of the offensive line and Gene Hickerson regained the lineup."

Interesting article on Pena - mentions that he may possibly be the only
NFL player of Cape Verdean heritage.

A little bit more research has found that Wayne Fontes, Tony Gonzalez and Stephen Cooper
also have Cape Verdean ancestors.

I'm thinking maybe he was picked on one of those pre-season all-rookie teams in one of the preview magazines.
