Dumont Near the End...

Dumont Near the End...

As the Dumont Television Network was nearing its end, one of the last straws they grasped was Saturday Night Football and presented National Football League Professional Football.

The competition was tough. They went up againt The Dotty Mack Show, Watch Mr. Wizard, and the Texaco Star Theater as the show aired and by half time they were battling the Saturday Night Fights.
Any excitement of last-minute finishes was lost as Your Hit Parade and its quartet of magic voices - which at one time even featured a young Frank Sinatra - filled the room with the top ten songs of the week.

The NFL show began around 1954.
Does anyone know how many games Dumont actually broadcast or was it just an attempt to preview the Sunday game or games.

Back then, if you recall, afternoon programming was still up for grabs and you could buy a couple of hours and broadcast an early version of "Deliverance" as unsuspecting men paddled down the Green River.
"It was a different game when I played.
When a player made a good play, he didn't jump up and down.
Those kinds of plays were expected."
