chatted with a current voter, he was not aware of if or when Hall might or might not release preliminary list or any other future lists of semifinalists etc....he seemed sincere and not leading me on in terms of keeping anything a secret that Hall has told voters not to discuss election process or outcomes with anyone, seems more like Hall has decided to even keep voters in dark-except when giving them a list and deadline to submit their vote-at each stage

oh well....

I don't agree as that was the process pre 2000 and I don't think the voters and process were well served by jump from 100+ to 15 finalists (which was how it occurred than). In my view, voters and fans should see preliminary list of all players nominated, the 25 semi-finalists and the 13 player finalists.
No one knows steps voters are now asked to take or if/when those lists are made public, but if we all are asking for transparency from the Hall seeing those three lists should be the least we expect.

It really wouldnt matter, Paul. We would all find out anyway, minus all the social media, regular media hysteria. The families should find out the process, possibly every step, but fans and observers can wait and it would be okay. Its not like we wont discover it later.

If anything, I want more reasoning, transparency and who actually decides the preliminary list? We basically know, but not everything about that process of the HOF, including rejection of fan mail-in votes, that I was part of.

prelims were very small -- and hard to find in the papers ... media didn't care but now, you can hunt for them due to online papers. Most people could not find this stuff back then

Thanks John ... interesting looking at a Contributors list from 1993 -- mostly HCs of course, with only McNally, Mara, and Modell, otherwise.

Conerly and Kooch were close as well, like Anderson.

Alot of Packers were looked at on the 1980 lists.

find out anyway?? given most of the voters who were active on social media, blog, radio, websites about Hall process and discussions are not longer voters-as appears Hall looks to eliminate any and all such discussions - we are now going to know far less than in past, unless released by the Hall how would we ever know the 50 or 25 semifinalists (and similar lists for coaches and contributors). And if candidates and families would be only ones informed, why not also make those public? Makes no sense to me not to.

And we know who creates the preliminary list, anyone can make a nomination (hence why we end up with massive lists) minimum requirement is one post season honor (such as pro bowl) and Hall staff has means to remove any candidate deemed with no chance to be elected, for example nominations for players whose best career was in CFL-since Hall bylaws refer to american professional football.
