Looking for NFL radio broadcast recordings, late 1960s–1980 (Steelers, Vikings, Cowboys especially)

Post by PaulDeVos »

I'm building a play-by-play and defensive-stats database from historical NFL gamebooks, and one big gap is tackler and sacker credits for games where the gamebook doesn't name defenders. The best thing would be getting better "gamebooks" or similar documents [if they exist] with the attribution for defensive players. But in lieu of that I've been looking for alternative sources. And it turns out Radio calls turn out to be very helpful source, because an announcer on radio almost always names the defenders involved, whether a tackle or even defending the pass. So I've been turning old broadcast audio into transcripts with the real rosters as a vocabulary guide, and in the few pilot cases, it seems to work pretty well.

So I'm trying to find full or near-full radio broadcasts of regular-season games, in any format (reel-to-reel, cassette, MP3, YouTube, Internet Archive), and also pointers to anyone who has them or to archives that might have them. Any ideas and sharing is greatly appreciated.

A few examples of Stations and announcers I'm trying to track down:
  • Steelers: KDKA through 1969, then WTAE from 1970, with Jack Fleming (play-by-play, 1965–93) and Myron Cope (color from 1970).
  • Vikings: WCCO as flagship 1961–69 (Dick Enroth, then Ray Christensen), KSTP 1970–75 (Joe McConnell, 1971–76), back to WCCO 1976–84 (Ray Scott, 1978–82). Games also aired on the Mutual network.
  • Cowboys: KRLD was the flagship through the 1970s and 80s, with Brad Sham from 1976.
I'm not sure who carried them in the 1960s (KLIF? WBAP?), so corrections are welcome.
Networks: Mutual, CBS Radio, NBC Radio and Westwood One broadcasts of any team.

I've found about some great video and radio broadcasts on YouTube by accounts like these:

Questions for the group:
  • Does anyone have personal collections of NFL radio broadcasts, or know collectors who do?
  • Are there archives that hold full radio calls I could access?
  • Any other ideas for sources that aren't already on YouTube?
