Rating the Super Bowl Champions of the 1970s

Post by saturdaysarebetter »

I'm currently reading Steve Perkins book, "The Dallas Cowboys - winning the big one," about the 1971 Cowboys. I had recently read his earlier book about the Cowboys, "Next year's Champions."

The '71 Cowboys roster had so many future hall-of-famers on it: Ditka, Staubach, Alworth, Hayes, Wright, Gregg (although he didn't see much action), Adderly, Renfro, Harris, Lilly, Howley along with terrific players like Cornell Green, Lee Roy Jordan, and John Niland as well.

Where do you rate the 1971 Dallas Cowboys in the list of Super Bowl champions of the 1970s? Some might say that's difficult to do, but hey, judges pick from hundreds of beautiful women in beauty pageants to pick the most beautiful woman.

1970 Baltimore Colts
1971 Dallas Cowboys
1972 Miami Dolphins
1973 Miami Dolphins
1974 Pittsburgh Steelers
1975 Pittsburgh Steelers
1976 Oakland Raiders
1977 Dallas Cowboys
1978 Pittsburgh Steelers
1979 Pittsburgh Steelers

Where do you rate the '71 Cowboys in the SB champions of the '70s and what would be your top 10 list?

One thing I’ll also add is that this team deserves a lot of credit for averaging 29 points per game, which is one of the highest averages in the 1970’s pre-Mel Blount rule.

As far as comparing them to the other champions of the 1970’s goes, I’d take those Cowboys over at minimum the 1970 Colts (who had a better season in 71, but weren’t as impressive in 1970 from the looks of it), and probably the 1974 Steelers (in my book the weakest of the four Steeler title teams in the 70’s.

I’m torn between the 71 and 77 Cowboys for the number eight and seven spot. Probably where they’d land for me.
