Cardinals/Giants

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

1970, and also 1984, come to mind when thinking of these two. Cards, sadly, were almost always odd-man-out in the NFC East. G-men weren’t winners during Coryell’s time in StL. Hardly any seasons in their long histories in which both were winners at the same time. Just thought I throw this out there in regards to their match-up this Sunday.

Thoughts?

In the Giants 1970 week 6 game against the Cardinals, Fran Tarkenton had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 and five touchdowns.

That’s only been done 14 times since the components of passer rating were first recorded in 1932, and Tarkenton’s performance was against a Cardinals team that ranked fifth by points allowed, and allowed a passer rating of 59.4 on the year which was sixth in the league (47.49 if Tarkenton’s performance is removed which would have been third).

Took a quick look at the teams that allowed five touchdowns and a perfect passer rating. So far as I can tell Jared Goff in 2018 vs the Vikings 9th ranked defense, and Drew Brees in 2009 vs the Patriots 5th ranked defense had a performance like that vs a top ten defense by points.

Also shoutout to the 2013 Raiders for allowing two performances of 5+ touchdowns and a perfect passer rating (to Nick Foles and Alex Smith) eight days apart.

Tark’s game in week 6 of 1970 is also the only performance of five touchdowns and a perfect passer rating between Frank Ryan’s in 1964, and Peyton Manning’s in 2003, so his is the only such performance in the lower scoring years of the late 60’s and 70’s pre-Mel Blount rule.

They had a 1st place showdown in December 1988 (on a day Philly lost at home to Washington) but the Lomax-less Cards got buried at the Meadowlands 44-7
