Honestly, Shula should have been fired after the 1988 season, when they went 5-11. It was time for him to move on. Csonka, Kiick, Griese, Warfield, and co. were not walking through that door.

Then, they should have went after Jimmy Johnson. I think he would have done better with Marino if he coached him earlier.

Who do they pick up in that ’89 draft? Not Sammie Smith sure-enough? Do they trade up? Could they get Emmitt in ’90? Jimmy would actually be building from scratch in this case.

A Dan Marino Trade (instead of Herschel)??

That infamous ‘Under Fire’ SI cover story during the ‘88 season with Landry and Noll on the cover…Shula’s name was also mentioned in that article. Oh how the mighty fell at that point. Miami played at Three Rivers in the season finale in a battle of 5-10s, Steelers winning it.

Marino clashed with Johnson as Johnson tried to reign the pass-happy turnover-prone no-one-can-tell-me-what-to-do quarterback.
"Dan's got to make some better decisions," Johnson had said at his weekly press conference the day before. "When he's getting banged around, he's made some poor decisions."
Johnson was referring to Marino's play in a 23-18 loss to the Bills on October 4th, a game in which Buffalo intercepted Marino twice.
That game Marino also fumbled twice losing it once and had a quarterback passer rating of 56.2

If that happens, then who replaces Landry in Dallas?

And yet somehow he managed to coexist with a pass-never play-not-to-lose-guy in Aikman

Why wouldnt Johnson co-exist with Aikman? Johnson told him he would start in 1992 and Aikman delivered by staying healthy and helping win a championship.

The Cowboys, like the Dolphins under Bob Griese, used a ball-control offense with an excellent defense. Aikman didnt have to sling the ball all over the field. He was paid to convert third down passes and maintain time of possession drives. The running game, defense and special teams did the rest. Marino didnt have those luxuries.
