In 1931, the Chicago Tribune reported the Bears were carrying 34 players on their roster for their opening game against the Cleveland Panthers (aka Indians). A scorecard/program for this game has 33 players listed and 27 were used in the game. The Tribune mentions that 12 players needed to be dropped after the third league game.
