Brees might have been thankful to Sean Payton in his HOF induction speech and rightfully so, but I feel Payton was also detrimental to his career. Brees was a great player and a precision passer but Payton had him throwing to where his arm was falling off. He never gave Brees the running game and consistent defense to help him obtain more championships.

From 2012-2016, the Saints mostly stayed in 7-9 season hell because they didnt have more than a passing game with the defense underachieving. Considering all the many talented players that were on these teams, even when they finally started winning again in 2017, Brees was worn out by seasons' end and couldnt take more advantage in the postseason his final four seasons.

Great QBs are never wanting to be considered as great regular season players only, but I feel Sean Payton failed his QB for too long. Maybe I am being harsh, after observing Fouts, Marino, Moon, Youngs, Peyton Manning's, Rodgers careers, but these great QBs couldnt get enough help from their coaches and teammates during the postseasons. Maybe in some or many cases, the QBs themselves disappointed or even choked, but once postseason started, every team needed to elevate their play and simply couldnt do it. By then, if a HC wasnt going to run and control the ball more to help his QB and defense, it put to much pressure on the QB to take the teams further.
