Six 2000s-2010s QBs in the Hall: all or none?

Post by readjack »

Of QBs predominantly in the 2000s and 2010s, Peyton is in Canton, Brees is getting inducted this summer, and Brady and Rodgers will join them. Let's look at this group:

E. Manning
Rivers
Roethlisberger
Ryan
Stafford
Wilson

If I said that this group has to stay together for Canton, would you elect all six, or would you reject all six?

(I think this is a Peirce Conboy exercise.)

Benr and (eventually) Eli-as for me winning SBs is now modern QBs need to be judged-Marino is the rare exception.

As to Stafford, now has MVP + SB + top 10 career passing stats=its enough for me

Yes, but what if I said: If you elect one, you elect all, and if you reject one, you reject all.

What would you choose? All or none?

Its hard to say none because of Big Ben ... I feel he is deserving and without his tackle in the huge upset of Indy in the 2005/06 playoffs, he might have waited awhile before getting his 1st championship ... a polarizing player with alot of critics saying his teams were loaded with talent but he still had longevity as well.

Is it really his fault that the Steelers had defensive meltdowns in the 2004/05 AFC Championship, 2010/11 SB and 2016/17 AFC Championship games? Yes, he had some interceptions and bad play in those games but the defense still played bad and uncharacteristic. Same with the shootout playoff losses to the Jaguars in 2008/09, the Jags again in 2017/18 and the expansion Browns in 2020/21. His last playoff loss, another blowout to the Chiefs to end the 2021 season.

Admittedly, Ben threw alot a postseason interceptions, many that put his teams in holes, but he also threw many trying to play catch-up as well when the defenses couldnt stop other teams. Should he get voted in while those other players dont? I say if he is voted in, at least two more will make it eventually.

Let's be clear: Roethlisberger is getting in, trends show that Eli and Rivers are getting in, and I think Stafford is clearly getting in.

My question is: if your choices are accept them all or reject them all, what do you do?

My answer to that question is reject them all.

I would basically say All, since championships still have weight but the statistics can get so bloated and overrated. The "Jack 6" as you mention, have six championships and nine conference championships between them.

So lets say you are right Jack? ... none of those six make it, then what? We all know Mahomes will make it, but what about possibly Allen or Jackson or even Burrow? ... will those three QBs have to have at least two championships to get elected? Could Jackson get elected without a championship despite nearly 3 MVP awards and All-Pro accolades? He could, but like Josh Allen, who could reach 100 career rushing TDs, its doubtful.

One championship should help all three QBs, though it might not help Burrow, whose body is brittle. I dont feel he will play 10 seasons, but Bengals fans sure hope so.

To me, this all started with Kurt Warner being elected. Despite one championship, his MVPs, accolades and other conference championships got him enshrined, despite a shorter career. It seems inevitable that every QB with one championship will have a chance, though Ryan and Rivers fell short. Are the days of passers being enshrined without championships--Jurgensen, Fouts, Marino, Moon, Rivers?--over?

I predict Big Ben will get in by 2030, after Brees and Brady, then Rodgers. After that, its a waiting game till Mahomes?

Warner had two NFL MVP, one SB and got a 2nd team to a SB-his case is very unique and doubt it a model for others
Same is going to be case for Jackson, even without a SB he will still have 2x MVP-are their any players in NFL history with multiple MVP not in Hall?
If there is a new "standard" it could be Stafford with a SB and a MVP (plus top 10 in career stats)
Not so sure without SBs that Burrow, Allen, Rivers, Ryan have a chance, and Wilson without MVP is very uncertain case
I do think we will see Brady, BenR, Eli, Rodgers (class of 2032) as the next wave of QBs elected

Well, it's not a question of me being "right." I'm not saying none will get in. Very evidently most will get in. I'm just asking people how they would feel about it one way or the other. That next generation of guys you named — Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Burrow, Hurts — is a separate group.

I thought Warner would have been a great senior candidate. He has a unique career. I thought they elevated him way too fast, and I think it's hurting Torry Holt right now. But I don't think his election has impacted the QB pool because his case is so different than others.

"Are the days of passers being enshrined without championships over?" No. Lamar and Josh Allen are both headed to Canton without rings.
