Jack Pardee or Jerry Glanville?

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

I know both get some notoriety due to their struggles in the playoffs. Glanville's antics, Pardee losing control of the team in '93, etc. But both were playoff-caliber HCs. Jerry did win three playoff games to five playoff defeats; two of those wins were on the road. Jack? I somehow keep forgetting that he only ever won ONE playoff game (1-5 all-time) - that being in '91, barely beating Coz's 8-8 Jets at home.

Pardee would have to get the nod as the better regular season HC. Whereas Glanville's best regular season output was 10-6 ('88 with Houston, '91 with Atlanta), Pardee at least posted 11-5 in '91 and then 12-4 with Houston in '93. You could say it was helped by he inheriting a playoff-caliber team from Glanville himself, but Jack leading the Bears to their first playoff appearance in 14 years in '77, and then that almost-top-seed finish in '79 with Washington is definitely a argument in his favor.

Of course there are better HCs out there you would rather have. But both did lead more than one team to the playoffs (9 post-seasons between them). If these were the only two to pick from, and you had to pick just one, who would it be? Who would you rather play for as a player?

And who would you rather have as your DC? Both were defensive minds, both played LB. Two totally different personalities for sure!

Of course Glanville did best Pardee in their 1990 opening game Hou@Atl showdown (Falcons debuting in their new black unis)!

Friend of mine did play for Jerry Glanville in college. RB for us in HS, moved to safety in college and was a starter Glanville's first year at Portland State. Also, got to see Mouse Davis' run and shoot every day.
