Week 8 Minnesota Vikings at Forbes Field

Pittsburgh blew leads of 14 to 0, 26 to 14, and 29 to 21. Finally with about two minutes left in the game Jim Christopherson kicked field goal of 26 yards and Vikings led for the first time 31 to 29. Staying calm and cool, Bobby Layne guided the team down the field with short passes and effective runs. At the Minnesota 32 yard line, Lou Michaels kicked a line drive field goal and the Steelers led again 32 to 31.

With good kickoff coverage for the Steelers, the Vikings began at their 11 yard line. Fran Tarkenton threw a desperation pass that Willie Daniel intercepted at the Minnesota 18. On the next and final play of the game, Bobby Layne handed off to Dick Hoak who ran in for a touchdown. Final Steelers 39 Vikings 31. This was at the time the third highest score in team history.

Pittsburgh ran for 212 yards and four touchdowns. Minnesota had an insignificant ground game with just 79 yards. Bobby Layne for the Steelers completed 16 for 28 passes for 254 yards. Fran Tarkenton completed 13 of 21 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns.

Individual Statistics

Pittsburgh-John Henry Johnson ran 25 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Dick Hoak caught four passes for 67 yards. Buddy Dial caught six passes for 103 yards. Minnesota-Tommy Mason caught four passes for 66 yards and one touchdown. Charley Ferguson also caught four passes 106 yards and two touchdowns.

Week 9 at St Louis

The Steelers erupted for 17 points in the last seven minutes for a 26 to 17 victory. The Cardinals outgained the Steelers with 335 yards to 253 yards but they could not overcome three interceptions and two fumbles. Brady Keys recorded two interception.

Bobby Lane completed eight of 14 passes for 79 yards. John Henry Johnson had a great day carrying 25 times for 138 yards and one touchdown. Preston Carpenter caught four passes for 38 yards and one touchdown. Charley Johnson completed 11 of 27 passes for 220 yards and those three interceptions. John David Crow carried 15 times for 91 yards and one touchdown. Bobby Joe Conrad four passes for 101 yards.
