it's a odd story, after the first alternate got hurt...they coul not get anyone to go, kept going down the list, no one woul accept, Kilmer, Gabrei, James Harris was hurt... so it finally came to Boryla. There was one report of Archie Manning plaing who was healthy after mising entire season. Game was in NO so he was local but suppose they thought better ... go with someone who actually played
Manning missed all of the 1976 season. He played in 1975, all but the last game. He and the Saints were terrible, but he played.

Did they ask Steve Bartkowski? He was better than Boryla. There weren't a lot of good NFC QBs.

Good call, my memory got it wrong. Thanks. Manning was asked but his arm was hurt. Looking back, I think they asked anyone and everyone, and finally, Boryla accepted

I have always wondered if Plunkett and Williams had made the Pro Bowl if the Conference rosters in 1980s carried three quarterbacks. While I am (maybe in the minority) who think that Pro Bowl selection mattered when comparing HOF/HOVG candidates, I think for quarterbacks doesn't really apply, because it's unfair for the 70's and 80's quarterbacks in comparision for the '90's-present quarterbacks. I think that Williams would have made it in 1980 or 1981, and Plunkett in 1983 if there was one more Pro Bowl slot.
