Wayne Walker (Detroit Lion linebacker)

Post by Halas Hall »

Wayne Walker played linebacker for the Lions for fifteen seasons / 200 games / on some stout Lion defenses. To me any player who has played in 200 games has a good case for consideration in the Hall of the Very Good, but he has not gotten traction in previous years.

What am I missing? Any thoughts here?

Thank you.

I remember voting for him somewhere along the line so he has been considered for the HoVG.
Heck, I might have even nominated him (at least once).
I suggest, if you feel strongly about him, you nominate Walker yourself this season.
There's only one way to find out how he'd fare this time around and that's to toss his hat (helmet) into the ring.

In addition to playing linebacker Walker was also a pretty decent (for the era) placekicker.
It looks like (from PFR) he was the Lions regular kicker from 1962-65.

Walker was a San Francisco Bay Area favorite as he was the sports director (1974-94) and covered sports on weeknights for the CBS affiliate (KPIX) here for many years. My mom also worked for KPIX during that time and always spoke highly of "Wayne" (and if you can't trust mom who can you trust?) saying he was a true gentleman.
And he was a "color commentator" for CBS, partnering with Tom Brookshier on regional games.

Fun fact from Wikipedia: He and Jerry Kramer were road-game roommates at Idaho where Walker was the long snapper for field goals and Kramer was the kicker.
