1984 Supplemental Draft for USFL/CFL players
1984 Supplemental Draft for USFL/CFL players
So as a Giants fan, how much blame should be given to George Young/Tom Boisture vs Parcells for taking Zimmerman who was very vocal about NEVER playing in NY vs drafting Reggie Fckin White? White who spent his Eagles career using the Giants offensive line as his personal blocking sled and Giant QBs as his personal tackling dummies.

White had some good games against the Giants but not against Mark Bavaro at TE. Bavaro blocked him better than any player until Erik Williams of Dallas.

So it was the other Reggie White that sacked Simms 15.5 times?Brian wolf wrote: ↑Thu Oct 02, 2025 10:26 pm White had some good games against the Giants but not against Mark Bavaro at TE. Bavaro blocked him better than any player until Erik Williams of Dallas.

Haha ... are you counting his time with GB? I can guarantee he didnt get by Bavaro too often ... I have some of the games.

So it wasn’t White who planted Simms in 1988 and knocked him out for several games? Yes, Bavaro stood up very well to White but to say he was neutralized? Please. I saw those games too.Brian wolf wrote: ↑Fri Oct 03, 2025 4:46 pm Haha ... are you counting his time with GB? I can guarantee he didnt get by Bavaro too often ... I have some of the games.
According to Pro Football Reference:
In 1985 White had 2.5 sacks against the Giants
In 1986 White had 1 sack against the Giants
In 1987 White had 5 sacks against the Giants
In 1988 White had 3 sacks against the Giants
In 1989 White had 3 sacks against the Giants
In 1990 White had .5 sacks against the Giants
Bavaro was gone after 1990

Good argument, though Bavaro was mostly hurt in 1989. In the the two SB years, White had 1.5 sacks according to your numbers.
I still believe White was the best DE ever, but Jones is there too.
I feel had Bavaro been healthy in 1989, the Giants would have challenged the Niners better than the Rams.

I’m as big a Bavaro fan as the rest (still have his poster) but he had other responsibilities besides just blocking White and I’m not sure how often 1v1 happened. Even if Bavaro bodied him every single time, White obviously didn’t let it get him down. There’s a Simms video where he talks about the beatings he’d receive from White, Ntm the rest of the Ryan Era Eagles D.Brian wolf wrote: ↑Fri Oct 03, 2025 7:50 pm Good argument, though Bavaro was mostly hurt in 1989. As for 1989, a fully healthy Bavaro would’ve helped because by then the Giants passing offense was plain offensive to watch.
The original point being the Giants passing on White to take a player who insisted he would never play in NY is I think a very interesting football what if.

Youre right, the Giants took the risk. Zimmerman would have been a great addition though. Passing on White was tough but they did pretty well getting Leonard Marshall. Martin was still giving good effort as well.
