Your Favorite NFL Announcers
Out of curiosity,
Totally different question than normal, but what are your favorite announcers in NFL history? Could be today or historical, could be on radio, or TV.
My favorite announcer other than my own team is the Eagles announcer Merrill Reese; closely followed by Paul Allen of the Vikings.
As for TV, I’ve liked Al Michaels over the years (though the past few seasons will not go down as his best work), and Mike Tirico on Sunday Night Football is pretty good too.
Also, shoutout to my team’s announcer Steve Raible; excellent Seahawks announcer and the KIRO 7 news anchor of my childhood.

I grew up on the ‘90s Packers, so any game called by John Madden and Pat Summerall felt special to me. Madden was such a fan of Brett Favre and Lambeau Field, so that helped endear him to me, but really in any game those two were perfect. Madden loved the history of the game, and he taught viewers about football through his commentary. Summerall said exactly what he needed to during a broadcast, never anything more than what was necessary. He never talked over the game, he let big plays breathe and resonate. We’ll never see another duo like those two.

The original, Pete Gross was good. Him w/Raible were the 710 team when I was a kid.SeahawkFever wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 11:51 pm Out of curiosity,

Like the Vikings get with the great Paul Allen, I wish we got Raible for [TV] preseason games, like we did in 2002 & 2003 on Q13 and FSNNW, respectively. At least we had Verne Lundquist & a random pxp appearance from local legend Kevin Calabro for preseason telecasts after that for a few years.
Other than hearing them in HLs, can't remember the last time I listened to a game on the radio, had to be early 90s for a blackout, which I usually just went to the Kingdome when that was going to be the case but have vague memories of being in the car listening to Gross/Raible. Guess worth noting, I do have the complete 2013 Seahawks season of radio broadcasts, just for background noise during the rare times I'm doing something other than watching football/sports.
Another local radio announcer who is good is Bob Wischusen with the Jets. Extremely good NHL announcer, sort of this generations Gary Thorne for NHL on ESPN, except he doesn't do the SCF, Sean McDonough has that and hockey is probably his worst sport when it comes to announcing -- always assumed he got the gig/#1 slot for NHL on ESPN as a make-up from ESPN for the MNF debacle. Either way, Wischusen is great on hockey, and when I hear him on HLs, sounds just as good on the Jets games.

I miss Mike Keith, who did Oilers/Titans radio for over 30 years. The Volunteers offered him too much money to do both so he calls UT games. It was fun listening to him call the Titans over the years. He had great chemistry with former HC, Dave McGinnis. Not a big fan of todays tv announcers.
My favorites were from collecting football or radio broadcasts. Al DeRogatis, George Allen, John Madden, Pat Summerall on color ... Summerall, Curt Gowdy, Jim Simpson, Al Michaels, Marv Albert, Ray Scott on play-by-play. Liked Dick Enberg as well. Jim Simpson was smooth as silk. Todays announcers could learn alot from him but would rather use bombast to keep listeners interested.

LIke many, I liked very much Pat Summerall and John Madden TOGETHER, and also Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen, you knew that the game was must-see with those two crews (nowadays, I don't know if is due to the internet, I don't have that feeling with the current announcers). I have heard (he was before my time) that Al DeRogatis was very highly rated as an analyst. And I like Howard Cosell when I see old videos, his intros and comments in the halftime highlights of other games also are still must-see.
On a side note, my favorite is still John Facenda. I hear his NFL Films narrations over and over. He was in another level.

Madden and Summerall were great together in the clips I've seen.Gary Najman wrote: ↑Wed Oct 01, 2025 11:23 am LIke many, I liked very much Pat Summerall and John Madden TOGETHER, and also Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen, you knew that the game was must-see with those two crews (nowadays, I don't know if is due to the internet, I don't have that feeling with the current announcers). If NFL Films is mentioned in this discussion, then John Facenda was an amazing narrator there. Great baritone.
Also, Steve Sabol while more of a presenter obviously could narrate over things pretty well too I think. I also have liked the voice of their later 80's/ early 90's narrator. (his name was Jeff Kaye I think?)
Going further back, Curt Gowdy was good in a few of the earlier Super Bowls too.
