After winning the 1957 NFL Championship, 59 to 14 over Cleveland, the Detroit Lions fell from 8-4 to 4-7-1. Even so, they still defeated the Browns at Cleveland 30 to 10. It is possible that the Lions gave an extra effort over their archrival. In addition to the rousing win in the title game, the Lions at home defeated the Browns during the 57 season 20 to 7. As the score indicates, this win in 1958 was even easier.
The Browns finished 1958 with a 9-3 record and a first place tie with the New York Giants in the Eastern Conference. Today the Browns got 123 rushing matched against only 91 for the Lions. Despite the lopsided loss, Jimmy Brown carried 21 times for 81 yards. The passing game was the real difference, 337 yards for the Lions to 247 yards for the Browns. Before a 21 to 17 loss at home to the New York Giants the previous week, the Browns had won their first five games. Cleveland's 5-1 record looked really great matched against 1-4-1 for the Lions
Detroit-Tobin Rote completed 17 of 30 passes for the aforementioned 247 yards. Howard Cassady caught four passes for 63 yards and one touchdown. Jim Doran caught five passes for 70 yards. Jim Gibbons caught three passes for 35 yards and one touchdown. Gene Gedman also caught a short touchdown pass.
Cleveland-In total, Jim Ninowski and Milt Plum completed 10 of 17 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown. Preston Carpenter caught three passes for 45 yards. With the score 30 to 3 late in the game, Ray Renfro caught a 36 yard touchdown pass from Ninowski for the Browns.
Sometimes when winning teams suddenly turn losers, they can reach back for one last effort against a long time rival. It reminds me of blind Samson pushing the pillars with both hands wrecking a great building and killing 3,000 men including himself.
