In regards to the 70 Colts, I honestly wonder if they would have beaten the 49ers and MVP John Brodie instead of a DAL team that basically won in spite of QB play.Brian wolf wrote: ↑Mon Jun 30, 2025 11:23 pm I agree as well on the 87 Redskins. The 2017 Eagles were on roll but Vegas didnt believe that Foles could get it done in the playoffs but like Hostetler in 90' and Dilfer in 2000, he did.
You mention the Steelers from 2005, 74_75_78_79 but that season came down to Big Ben's open field tackle against Indy in the playoffs! Big Ben probably wont go first ballot but will easily be in the Hall.
Great year for Baltimore in 1970 but this veteran team beat alot of bad AFL teams as well. Knocking Namath out for the year, helped though Miami challenged as well. I still wish I could get a game film or tv broadcast of Baltimore beating the Raiders at Municipal Stadium.

Would have been a damn good game ... CS. Had Brodie played and won that SB, might be in the HOF. I think like Dallas though, the Colts pass rush would have gotten to him. Brodie known for getting happy feet in the pocket. His intenional grounding throws made the officials tighten up on that penalty. Another close game but Johnny U I felt, would have played better. Could Hardman had gotten to him?

John Brodie's 1970 MVP season might get my vote for the most overlooked quarterback season ever.Brian wolf wrote: ↑Tue Jul 01, 2025 2:44 pm Would have been a damn good game ... CS. He won an MVP, and had one of only five seasons where a quarterback simultaneously led the NFL in passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions, and passer rating, and one of only two where the player didn't lead the league in pass attempts (Kurt Warner in 2001 being the other). Was he in the right place in history to do it? I'm sure he was (and if Daryle Lamonica plays every game for the Raiders he might not have led in all four stats), but a great accomplishment to have done either way.
Brodie also did this with a running game that ranked 21st in yards per carry (his two most common rushers were Ken Willard who averaged 3.3 yards per carry and Doug Cunningham who averaged 3.5 yards per carry), and while Gene Washington was the top receiver by yardage with 1,100 and receptions with 53, his next most common target, Bob Windsor is listed with only 363 yards receiving.
Brodie and the Niners also won a playoff game against the Vikings in Minnesota. Minnesota admittedly had Gary Cuozzo at quaterback who I've heard wasn't very good, but they also had the number one defense.
Brodie in 1970 gets my vote for the most overlooked QB season there is.

Brodie did have a great season but I also felt, got worn down in the playoffs ... of course with the Vikings and Cowboys defenses, any QB will struggle. Other than the Rams and Raiders, they didnt beat any other strong team. The Lions whipped them and they lost to the Falcons before tying the Saints. Still, the team finally met expectations.
