Players with AV of 120+; retired in 1999 or earlier, and aren't HOF or HOVG

Pro Football Reference has a stat called approximate value (explained here): https://www.pro-football-reference.com/ ... _value.htm

That stat attempts to place a number on every season of a players career since the 1960 season (before which point field goal distance splits were not tracked).

Naturally most of the players who put up the highest career totals in this metric are or will be in the Hall of Fame (ex: Tom Brady, Drew Brees), some might be but retired recently enough that they are not eligible for the Hall of Very Good yet (ex: Matt Ryan), and others played their last game in 1999 or earlier and aren't in Canton but are already in the Hall of Very Good (ex: Ron McDole).

Either way, there are 238 players who are credited with a career Approximate Value of at least 120.

These are the six players who are not in the Hall of Fame, nor Hall of Very Good, and retired far enough back that they could be inducted to the Hall of Very Good:

Dave Krieg
Boomer Esiason
Jim Hart
Wayne Walker
Wilber Marshall
Max Montoya

I'd argue Marshall is the best of these players, but that's just me. Not to suggest that he's as good as Lawrence Taylor or anything, but in 1986, Marshall shows up as the best player in the league by the metric.

Interesting post, thank you for the insight.

Marshall is a Finalist on this year's ballot for the HOVG.
