Re: Most boring NFL season?

I would go with 1987 or 1982 because of the strike interruptions.

If we're just talking regular season, I will go with those. 1982 did have one of the most iconic SB plays, though. It was neat that a kicker was MVP. But missing several weeks of football with the only option being the CFL (sorry, I don't dislike the CFL but I pick NFL over it every day.)

1987 was the replacement players. I couldn't watch those games - just not interesting enough from me. I can't totally discount that season on a personal level because it was the only time that I got to see John Elway in person - my dad took me to Broncos / Packers in Milwaukee. Thankfully they played the game before the strike. It was a rare NFL tie. But overall, that regular season ended up the one I would pick because teams with the better replacements were luckier than those whose replacements ended up losing each game. It skewed the playoffs. So, overall, I'd pick 87 over 82 I think.

Actually the best team other than the Niners in 1989 were the Vikings but Montana disposed of them. Though the Steelers should have beaten the Broncos in postseason, I felt the Broncos could have stayed with the Giants or Rams. Depends on how Elway's sickness might have played out. Without Bavaro the Giants werent as good as 1990 and I never felt Chris Everett, er ... Jim, could win it all despite his passing ability. The Browns were tired after fighting for their division but managed to hold off a Bills team that had talent but could lose focus with team distractions.

The NFC that year had a bunch of 10 win teams but they feasted off a weak bottom tier

Outside of SF who else in the 89 NFC was truly SB worthy?
I don't see a ton of difference between the 1989 Giants and the 1990 Giants.

The Broncos weren't SB worthy. I think either the Giants or Rams take care of them fairly easily.
Fairly easily? The 89 Rams had no defense. They would not have beaten DEN

The NFC of 1989 was vastly overrated IMHO

1970 ... a season which only stands out as the first post-merger, and the worst Super Bowl of them all ..

I was always surprised to read about how bad of a game Super Bowl V supposedly was because growing up watching Super Sunday the NFL Films clip made it out to be a pretty epic game, a Super Bowl comes down to the last second field goal that's pretty high drama. Then the aftermath with Lilly's record setting helmet throw distance, a record I believe still stands to this day.

I think another user put 2000 down in another thread when Titans/Ravens came up. I like that little era there 2000 to 2005, that was still some really hard hitting physical football those years. 2000 had some good rivalries in Baltimore vs Tennessee and I really liked what New Orleans vs St. Louis had going that season too. I really liked the Raiders, Bucs, and had high hopes for the Redskins free agent team it was at least interesting.

The 2000 season was the one that got me back into watching NFL again after 2 years of not being into it in 97-98. Really I guess I could say the 1999 playoffs got me back into it, where I hadn't paid any attention to the 1999 season all of a sudden Washington is in the playoffs, Stephen Davis and Marshall Faulk two guys that I believed years before were going to be huge were suddenly dominating the NFL, everything going on with the Rams/Titans, always loved that Tampa Bay team(Alstott probably my favorite player ever or second favorite behind Andre Johnson) so loved seeing them in a NFCCG run. Something about it felt new and fresh and exciting, that was a good playoff tournament. So that all carried over into 2000 and I was back into it.

For me I lost interest in the NFL through the 1997 season. No Houston Oilers, the Tennessee Oilers just felt... off. The Browns changing to the Ravens also killed something. Like something just wasn't right. And I got bored with Aikman vs Young vs Favre, I got bored with Favre especially he was everywhere in 1997 I mean EVERYWHERE. I lost interest but still watched in 1997 and remember watching Barry get 2,000, remember the resurrection of the Bucs with their new unis early in the season. Somehow missed Warren Moon's comeback season(Seahawks games didn't come on here much back then, if ever). But as 1997 played out I started to miss the glory days(for me) of 91-93 from when I was a little kid, I missed those old uniforms from that period and the players and look/feel of the game. But 1998 I lost interest and stopped watching, I missed all of those playoffs and only watched bits and pieces of Super Bowl XXXIII, was just not interested. I'm looking back now and starting to realize I missed a pretty good season in the NFL that year(98), damn you 97.

Steve Sabol admitted many years after the fact that he went out of his way to edit the SB III highlights to make it look a lot more exciting than it was. Being a loyal NFL guy, he couldn't bear to portray the Colts getting stomped the way they were.

Similar trickery was used on the SB V film. It was a close game, but mostly because neither team seemed to want to win. I think the most common reaction to the ending was, Thank god we won't have overtime.

1970 may not be the best NFL season ever, but IMO its far from being the worst. The same exact thing, IMO, about Super Bowl V. A game I would still like to see in its entirety - pre-game and commercials included and the halftime show which already is all accessible; just no 4th Q with commercials along with no post-game show (Virginia giving the Colts the Trophy) which, of course, I want to see all that as well!

Football can be ugly sometimes. Hard-hitting game causing all those turnovers. Big D was real close to making it 20-6 at one point, but it turned out a competitive game scoreboard-wise all the way to that last, successful, game-winning/final play FG-attempt. And, aesthetically albeit superficially, Dallas wearing blue contrasting the Colts' white under the Miami sun does it for me (it wouldn't look/'feel' the same the other way around).

Yes, an apparently un-pretty game, which didn't make the Colts players feel any better even in victory - the dark cloud of SBIII along with '64 & '67 forever hanging over their heads, not to mention any of them being named the game's MVP. I guess their take on winning that SBV Ring is the equivalent of Peyton's take if he only ever won a Super Bowl in that final year of his, 2015.
