Douglass wasn't acquired until the season had already started, so the Packers' quarterbacks going into the first game were Whitehurst (two career wins), Dennis Sproul (zero), and Neil Graff (zero).
Pack must have been assuming the leg would be good to go for 1978 ... at least at some point. They IR'd or PUPed him in preseason. Maybe it was wishful thinking ... turns out Whitehurst was decent for that year ...

Dickey's recovery was hampered by a number of factors, some of which were due to the incompetence of the doctors treating him. His injury was horrific, but he shouldn't have been out of commission for two entire years.

Didn't know that -- that docs messed up, thanks.

But I forgot that Bobby Douglass was on that team.

So I wasn’t too far off! Thanks!

The 1977 Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened with
Randy Hedberg (rookie, 0 wins, never did win one)
Gary Huff (5 career wins, all in Chicago)
Jeb Blount (rookie, 0 wins, never did win one)

Mike Boryla had 8 career wins (all with Philadelphia) but injured his knee in the preseason, else he likely would have been the starter on opening day.
