Thanks - I'll revisit it. A number of years ago I'd looked through the archives. It was quite recently that a voter supplied the information about his late add to retirement list. Not doubting you, simply verifying.

Yeah, I know what you are referring to -- and that voter was in error. He was misinformed by someone and then wrote about it. He chose to go with the the "someone" rather than Hall info and the paper(s) at the time.

Tyrer announced his retirement at a presser in early July of 1975. Deacon Jones in June of 1975, Bob Lilly in late July of '75 and Jim Otto announced he was retiring in late August of 1975. Otto was planning to play in '75 if his knees would hold.

As you know those three were first-ballot guys. I think it's likely that with Tyrer not being on prelim list since mid-1980s people paid attention and asked why he was on Final 15 after the murder/suicide and not before and not before. And the only explanation off top of their head could have been that he was not eligible in 1980. But he was and was on prelim but missed final 15 -- but that's just a guess.

But the late retirement does not quite fit..others retired later and were on finalist list, and also prelim ... one as late as mid-Sept.

What strikes me though about Tyrer’s retirement is that articles reference it almost as if it were an afterthought. The headlines read “Dave Hill Announces Retirement” and then mentions that at the same press conference Tyrer said “he was quitting too.” I wonder if there were formal retirement papers that had to be filed that, perhaps, don’t align with the date of the press conference.

Also of note in one of those articles: it says that when Ed Budde steps off the field “and into the Hall of Fame” that era of the Chief’s dominant offensive line will officially be over. Of course we know now that Budde never really got his due either.

There are papers that have to be filed for retirement ... but I don't think they have anything to do with when a guy is eligible. They are eligible 5 years after retirement -- I seriously doubt the Hall checked NFL paperwork for players -- even now. I guess we could ask if it is currently done, but not sure what purpose it would serve.

And Tyrer was on the 1980 preliminary list, along with Jones, Otto, etc. (finalists) and preliminary guys like COrnell Green and Dave Robinson, etc.

I honestly think that voter you referred to got incorrect information and was faced with choosing the names on preliminary list reported at the time and what is in Hall record's versus someone's recollection. My opinion is there is strong evidence that Tyrer was on preliminary list in 1980 and missed the cut to finals.

That's been the narrative for a long time (I thought it was correct, too) but you're right. Found the list of prelim guys from 1980.
