AP MVP QBs And Postseason Wins

Post by Brian wolf »

With QBs having a strangle-hold on AP MVP awards, I wanted to list the QBs that won MVP awards but had little, if any success, leading their teams in postseason.

AP MVP QBs With No Career Postseason Wins

1963 -- YA Tittle
1969 -- Roman Gabriel*
1976 -- Bert Jones**
1980 -- Brian Sipe

Of the 10 QBs with Multiple AP MVP awards since 1957, Lamar Jackson has the fewest postseason wins with three, which may also duplicate his third MVP award.

When Ken Anderson won MVP in 1981, it was also the only year he won in postseason with two wins.

*Gabriel probably should have been MVP in 1967, but Unitas won his third award after leading the Colts to an 11-0-2 start.

**This MVP award played a role in Jones being elected HOVG despite an injury-shortened career.

I had no idea that NEA MVP awards(Jim Thorpe) went to Simms in 1986 and Cunningham in 1998? I knew Conerly won the award for 1959. Bob Griese in 1971, Dan Fouts in 1982 and Warren Moon in 1990 also won the award.

YA Tittle won two awards, two UPI MVPs also, but never a postseason game.
