In his time, Tatum was considered the most feared hitting defensive player in the NFL but could also be very inconsistent.
Sometimes he would try for the knockout hit and would fail to wrap-up and tackle, or intercept a pass. Other times, like Ronnie Lott, his hits would injure his own players. His hands got better for interceptions as he lost his speed and relied on experience and savvy but some felt he got fooled too much in coverage.
All-Madden teams?
Re: All-Madden teams?
Tatum was such a solid tackler and fierce hitter that Woody Hayes sometimes used him at linebacker when Ohio State was facing a team with an especially tough running back. Under the tutelage of George Atkinson et al., his focus as a pro drifted more toward those brutal tackles, often at the expense of sensibly playing the ball. His interception totals were decent, but he only recovered three fumbles in his career (one of which was the record-breaker at Green Bay that shouldn't have counted). That's a pretty meager total for a free safety.

According to Pro Football Reference, Tatum recovered ten fumbles in his career, although in his last five years with the Raiders, he only recovered one. PFR lists Tatum as having three fumbles in his career. Perhaps that was what you were looking at?
Re: All-Madden teams?
Yes, sorry, I misread his total -- it's 10 fumble recoveries. Contemporaries such as Wehrli and Krause ended up with at least twice that total.
