Re: Last 2 way player?
A better question might be, who was the last 2-way lineman? Someone who played on the offensive line and either defensive line or linebacker. E.J. Holub of the Kansas City Chiefs comes to mind.

Irv Eatman out of Dayton, Ohio played on the offensive and defensive lines for the UCLA Bruins in the early 1980s before going onto a ten plus year career in pro football. He may have played on both sides of the line for Jim Mora’s Philadelphia Stars. I will look into this.

I remember that. That was in 1966, when Landry was looking to re-tool a stodgy offense into a more wide-open attack. Renfro, in his third season, was the starting HB out of camp but Mel got injured in the opener, missed a few games, and meanwhile Dan Reeves took over and had a big season. Mel went back to defense full-time though he may have pulled some spot duty on offense the rest of the season. Mel was a champion sprinter in college and Landry sometimes had him and Bob Hayes line up wide on the same side---bombs away for Meredith. Renfro was never seen as an every-down kind of back and wasn't any kind of a blocker or inside runner, so the experiment probably was doomed to fail, especially with Reeves in the wings.Halas Hall wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 2:18 pm I want to say there was a time in the 1960s where Tom Landry considered using Mel Renfro on offense and defense in training camp but the idea was shelved early on. Maybe Hunter is somewhat similar to Renfro when he came out of Oregon?
