The 79 Rams no doubt faced a good offense in that game. When I unveiled the offense score percentages, the Seahawks came up as the best offense of 1979. The Rams themselves show up as the sixth best defense.

It'll definitely be tough for a defense to allow fewer than -7 yards in a single game.

Seattle could move the ball in both 1978 and 1979 ... fell off in 1980 .. though Zorn could still make plays but Jim Jodot and Dan Doornick are not what I'd call good weapons.

But for 1979. Rams were injured on offense that year, the defense had some injuries at CB. Both Rod Perry and Pat Thomas were out that game, knee and calf, though Thomas had knee issues as well. Perry played on "one leg" (per coaches) most of the year. Thomas was never 100% after the first month.

So, that game, Dwayed O'Steen started for Thomas, Nolan Cronwell started for Perry, and Eddie Brown started at safety. On nickel downs, Cromwell moved to slot CB (which he always did that year), and Sid Justin played right corner. Jack Reynolds would leave the game.

The game plan was threefold, that sounds simple but things are easier said than done

1. Stop the run
2. Blitz on 3rd down or show blitz and not make young CBs cover too long
3. Keep Zorn from rolling out. He did his best playmaking outside the pocket. So the DEs were not to go inside (they loved setting up Ts by going outside, then make an inside move, but not that game, for the most part)

Seattle offensive weakness was the online - overachievers, they usually played well that year, but no one was going to be sending them to the Pro Bowl, either.

Seattle couldn't run and Zorn was inaccurate and also was pretty much kep in pocket, though he did get out a couple of times.

Rams controlled the clock on offense so Seattle didn't run a lot of plays, they could not get tracked, and there were a bunch of 3 and outs.
There has been a game in single digits since, positive or negative but quite a few of teams under 100 yards.

See? He helped his team win by leaving the game.

Getting back to Brett Favre's consecutive games-starts streak and looking at Josh Allen's one snap and credited loss while continuing his active streak for QBs, here are the longest consecutive game streaks for QBs in NFL history (100 minimum)

1) Favre ---------------- 297 games (Not counting postseason)
2) Rivers --------------- 240
3) E Manning -------- 210
4) P Manning -------- 208
5) Ryan ------------------ 154
6) Wilson --------------- 149
7) Stafford ------------- 136
8) Flacco --------------- 122
9) Jaworski ------------ 116
10) Brady ----------------- 112
11) Brady ----------------- 111
12) Brady ----------------- 110
13) Ferguson ----------- 107
14) Allen ------------------ 105 (Active)

14. Ahman Green in 2003 rushed for 1,883 yards and didn’t lead the league in rushing yards.
Derrick Henry will break this next week.
Derrick Henry did break that record this season, but Green averaged about four more yards per game than Henry did.

Sounds like I underestimated how many carries some top backs still get individually in 2024.

Do you think we will ever see a quarterback start a Super Bowl, play essentially the entire game (correct me if I’m wrong but I see no other player with any pass attempts in the box score), win the game, and complete fewer than the six passes that Bob Griese threw in Super Bowl VIII?

Even in game that were played in New York Stadium, outdoors (IF they ever do that again) ... and there was wind, ice, rain and so on, you'd think a QB could complete 6 passes, even short ones to get ball moving.

Yeah ... that's a tough one to top.

Boris Shlapak holds a record that will never be broken. The former Michigan State placekicker played one year in the NFL with the 1972 Baltimore Colts. He holds the record for lowest field goal percentage with at least eight attempts. His 1972 and career totals were eight attempts with none made for a percentage of .000. Considering the quality of today's kickers there is no way a placekicker would be around to try number nine. Mr. Shlapak has etched his name in the NFL record book for all time!

That might be every bit as unbreakable as anything I thought of earlier. There have not been six ties this decade so far, let alone close to six by a team in a season.

In 2021 with the Seahawks, Russell Wilson was 5th all-time in consecutive starts with 149 for QBs* before getting injured and missing three games. Since returning to the line-up that year, he has amassed a starting record of 21-30 counting postseason, with Seattle, Denver and Pittsburgh.

What happened? Has he simply not been the same player since his injury, or since he went to Denver in free agency? Has he not lost anything, but simply had bad circumstances? Statistically, he did play well for Denver last year and Pitts this year, though as pointed out by Clark Judge today on TOFTWO, he is only 2-13 as starter his last three years in Dec and January. I still hope the Steelers bring him back.
