In defense of Jim Benton ... according to statistics from 1950 on PFR, Benton was still second in receiving yards all-time to the great Don Hutson, despite the dominance of Speedie and Lavelli in the AAFC. He had retired in 1947. He helped the Bears and Rams win championships and could have been the MVP of the 1945 Championship game. His game yardage record of 303 yrds stood for over 40 years. He was also second to Hutson all-time in receptions and TD catches his final season. Deserving of the HOF.
