Leading the league in primary volume stat and primary rate stat

Post by JameisBrownston »

Derrick Henry is currently leading the NFL in both carries and yards per carry. This seems almost impossible to keep up for a full season. Has it ever happened before? If so, who was it? Probably Jim Brown?

Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson is somehow sitting last in the NFL in both passes per game and completion percentage. I assume QBs who play like this typically get benched, but have we seen other instances where someone maintained this for a significant stretch or until they got benched?

Jim Brown led in Carries and Yards per carry in both 1963 and 1964

Hutson did it in 1939 for receiving. Desmond Howard for punt returns in 1996.

O.J. Simpson did it too -- but in 1975, not 1973, which surprised me. He did average six yards a pop in '73, but I guess somebody managed to beat that. I didn't check to see who.

Elroy Hirsch did it in 1951, possibly the best season any receiver ever had.

Yeah, I assumed Hutson and Hirsch would be the only ones to have done it for receiving. For QBs, completion percentage or yards per attempt could be used as the rate stat. Maybe Luckman did it for one or both?

(Actually, to my surprise, he only led in Y/A in 1943, not Cmp% or attempts. Benny Friedman probably did it at least once.)

Lance Alworth had a Hirsch/Hutson-like season in 1965 with 1,602 receiving yds and 23.2 Avg. Also led with 14 TD. All were career highs. His 69 receptions weren't good enough to lead the loop, though. Didn't look but it probably was Lionel Taylor.

As far as punt returns, Tom Watkins led in yards (399) and avg. (12.5) with 1963 Lions. I'm sure there been a few other punt and KO returners who've led in yards and avg.

Walter Payton in his MVP season of 1977 rushed for the most yards per carry on the most attempts.

He also led in yards from scrimmage, rushing touchdowns and touchdowns from scrimmage.

For returners, return attempts and yards per return would be the pertinent categories. Desmond Howard did this in 96 for punts, as Jay-Z noted.

I remember Mercury Morris averaging something like 6.4 for the 73 Dolphins.
