From what I've been able to gather from Oilers players and writers from the time, the Phillips firing had a lot to do with the unwillingness to hire an offensive coordinator. There may have been other reasons of course, but that is from what I've been told was something that was a major source of disagreement.

Not for certain but I actually feel Bud Adams was jealous or threatened by Bum's popularity? Adams thought he could be arrogant as well and like Jones, there was only room for one ego at the top. It didnt make sense though. Bum not only won 10 games in 1975 but had a winning record in 1977 as well before Campbell joined the team. All this winning with an average QB in Pastorini but maybe Adams didnt like seeing him go to the Raiders?

Bud Adams had clashed with Don Klosterman in the late 1960s which led Klosterman to leave to Rosenbloom and the Colts and Rams to far greater success. This led the Oilers down the path to the Ed Hughes/Bill Peterson rock bottom years. Sid Gillman was brought in and fixed things quickly, then clashed with Adams and had to go. Bum Phillips was a no-name when he started, but then became more famous and problems with Adams ensued.

This is a franchise with one SB appearance ever. It's not a great franchise. Just because others have fewer doesn't make it a good franchise.

What are all your takes on him so far as a HC? What past HCs would you place him alongside? I thought of Chuck Knox, but got to place Knox quite above. Sean only has made it to one CCG whereas Chuck appeared in three - his Seahawk feat in '84 quite a notable over-achievement.

I don't think the CCG comparison is a fair metric. Knox coached the Rams in the 1970's, before the wild card round. A playoff team only had to win one playoff game to reach the Conference Championship Game. Now, in the 2020's, a team has to win two playoff games to reach the CCG (unless they get the #1 seed.) Both Knox and McDermott only have one postseason in which they won two playoff games.

Knox went to four conference championship games, including three in a row 74-76. The 1975 and 1983/84 games were blowouts though, which could hurt him.
