Thoughts on Dave Brown?
Thoughts on Dave Brown?
The CB, not the QB. He was before my time, but Dave Brown put up impressive numbers even into his late-30s. A Seahawk for the majority of his career before finishing with the Packers, he's currently tied for 10th all-time in career interceptions. It's surprising to me that he only made one Pro Bowl in his entire career. For those who saw him play, in your opinion, is there a reason he wasn't even one of the 138 senior player nominees for the Hall of Fame this year?
Re: Thoughts on Dave Brown?
He was very solid in his Packers tenure at the end of his career.
He only made the PLAYOFFS twice in his tenure as a starter. Kenny Easley made the HOF out of the same defensive backfield, so he wasn't the best DB when the team was any good. John Harris out of that same defense had 50 picks.
The defenses during the good Patera years, 1978-79, were not very effective overall. That probably hurt him more than anything. The team's okay but the defense isn't, then the team is bad in a small market. He wasn't going to get honors unless he's an obvious All Pro, and I guess he wasn't quite at that level. Even the Packer years, no playoff teams, probably not really remembered there either, it wasn't like Ken Riley with a late SB appearance.

Yeah, he came over and not much was expected from him, but he ended up being one of the best CBs the Packers had in that era. It reminded me of when Jan Stenerud came to the Packers and was immediately the best K they had in a decade. I remember Pat Fischer having played the most games at CB in history....Brown came close to surpassing Fischer but had a season at FS which made him come up short. I heard that Pat Fischer passed away recently...he was one of my favorite players of all time.

How were the secondary players outside of Dave Brown?Jay Z wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 6:53 pm He was very solid in his Packers tenure at the end of his career.

The 1976-79 Seahawks defenses had some expansion guys that had started elsewhere, Eddie McMillan et al. 1976-79 were bad defenses.SeahawkFever wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 9:39 pmHow were the secondary players outside of Dave Brown?Jay Z wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 6:53 pm He was very solid in his Packers tenure at the end of his career.

The 1980s defenses Brown played on were mostly good. Not great. Easley I mentioned. Brown had his share of INTs but so did Easley, Harris, Keith Simpson, other players. The defense seemed a little INT heavy compared to overall production. Once Jacob Green got there the sacks went up and the back seven likely had more help.
The Packers had some vets, the bald Mark Murphy, Mark Lee. An average to good defense before and during Brown's tenure.
Brown was always a good player. I'd rather put in Albert Lewis myself for a contemporary of Brown's. He wouldn't be a terrible choice, but I'd probably favor a couple of others and some of the players who will be on the ballot coming up.
