Bob Pelkington, scoring machine

Post by Bob Gill »

Bob Pelkington was a 6-foot-7 tight end who played college ball at Xavier (Ohio) and then spent six years (1965-70) in the Continental League and the Atlantic Coast League, the two best minor leagues of the time. In those six seasons he spent time with six different teams. Altogether he caught 159 passes, including a high of 52 in 1968 -- but for all that, he scored just ONE touchdown.

I'd be willing to bet that's the lowest ratio of touchdowns to receptions in the history of pro football.

Funny thing, though: Pelkington also played three years of basketball at Xavier, and was very good, with overall averages of 16.6 rebounds per game and 13.4 points. To sum up, then, in basketball he averaged 13 points per game; in football -- post-collegiate football, anyway -- he scored a total of 6 points in six seasons.

The closest I could find off-hand was looking up one of my least favorite RBs of all-time...Raymont Harris. He had 114 receptions and 1 TD.

Another Bear, Roland Harper, caught 128 receptions with only 3 TDs.

Gerald Riggs caught 201 passes, with no one going for a TD.

Interesting topic and got me digging around. Here are the most receptions in a season w/o a score:

86 Diontae Johnson, 2022 PIT
85 James Wilder, 1984 TB
81 Roger Craig, 1986 SF
76 Leonard Fournette, 2019 JAX
75 Raymond Berry, 1961 Balt

Berry's failure to dent the EZ in 1961 is interesting. Just two years earlier, he had caught 14 TD passes in a 12-game season. In fact, in the 3 seasons prior to being blanked in '61 he had recorded 33 TDs in 36 games.
