When they decided to assign numbers to the officials, there was not even a murmur that some had three digits.
If they go to three digit numbering for players, after the first few flabbergasted media releases, it will quietly pass.

I was surprised the first time I drove in Texas that some of their roads
have four digits. Roads in the northeast only have a maximum of three.

I guess a three-digit uniform number wouldn't be that outlandish.

3-digit number on an NFL jersey has already happened.

I would be against it in current times though, just for aesthetic reasoning.

Well, there are three numbered officials since the introduction of the side judge in 1978. John Madden always criticzided that, he said that three numbered referees didn't commanded respect.

With over 35,000 badges on the streets, it is not long before the NYPD has to re-issue numbers.
My nephew went on the job with a very low three-digit shield.
That was 20+ years ago and it was probably the third or fourth time around.

And, speaking of clutter... I think the New York State license plates are up to ten digits?

It won't be long before the SS system is saturated but, by then, they'll be implanting dots and out of money
and a lot of us will be gone.

The Thule Icemen will be one of the NFL expansion teams and the annual Catholics vs. Convicts game
will be played in Salt Lake City.

And who cares what John Madden thinks about officials' number?
