Two very close games those CCs were that year. Each could have gone either way.
Whether a Pats/Saints showdown, Chiefs/Saints, or - last but not least - Chiefs/Rams in a '54-51' rematch, how do you think each one turns out?
Do Pats & Rams hold NO & KC at just 3 and 13 points respectively in either case?
If SBLIII (2018) was not NE/Rams

I don’t know what I’d say about the other two hypothetical matchups off the top of my head, but if it was Saints and Chiefs, I might be inclined to favor New Orleans.74_75_78_79_ wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 10:19 pm Two very close games those CCs were that year. Each could have gone either way.

The Chiefs had a better offense than the Saints, but the Saints had a better defense than the Chiefs, and I think the gap between the defenses might have been bigger than said gap between the offenses.

Had the Chiefs completed their comeback and beaten the Patriots at home, I believe they would have beaten either the Rams or Saints in the SB. It would have been nice to see what Brees and the offense could have done against KC, yet even with a better defense, the Saints would have to somehow avert a shootout.
Those last years of Brees career were tough because the team still didn't run the ball enough to keep his arm lively for the playoffs. Despite his technical process as a passer, carrying a team throughout the year still took it's toll on him physically, and Payton needed more of a team effort and time of possession to get that second championship. Despite the debacle to Minn and Diggs during the 2017/18 playoffs, I felt the defense stepped up from 2018-20 but the offense just couldnt make enough plays to win in postseason. Of course that controversial non-penalty against the Rams could have changed everything.
As for the Rams, the mysterious disappearance of Gurley from the SB game-plan (11 touches) still rankle fans to this day. Maybe he was hurt but he seemed fine to me on his one 16yrd run. I have my own "conspiracy" theories about the Rams two SB appearances, but the results are in the books, so I will just let those thoughts lie ... it's not like I haven't expressed them on this forum before ... haha
