HOVG: Some candidates who played between 1920 and 1945

Post by TanksAndSpartans »

These are the players from Chris Willis' latest book not yet in the HOVG:

1. Ward Cuff (32)
2. George Christensen (35)
3. Joe Kopcha (37)
4. Jack McBride (39)
5. Red Dunn (40)
6. Ed Danowski (41)
7. Charley Brock (43)
8. Roy "Father" Lumpkin (45)

I'm scanning the book and going from memory on HOVG. Let me know if I made any errors. Looks like yesterday was the last day for 2024 nominations. Hope some of these players get a shot, if not, there's always next year.

Joe Kopcha
I nominated Kopcha this year ... based partially on Chris, partially on his All-pros and so on ... plus he was a member of PFRA!

I was looking up info on Kopcha and found an old Coffin Corner article:
https://profootballresearchers.com/arch ... 07-275.pdf

I laughed out loud when I read the last part...
"If you were to visit his home, he'd proudly show you his well-equipped printing shop
where he actually did job printing. Many PFRA members have received samples of his work...

On a shelf in my home is a sample of Dr. Joe's printing prowess. It's a lovely book; gold
print on the shiney black cover reads, "Highlights in the Sex Life of Bob Carroll, Authentically Described
and Accurately Illustrated." It always gets a smile when visitors open it to discover blank pages. Alas!
It's classed as non-fiction.

How about Frank Cope? It was a dubious selection but the only all decade I know of hand who's not in.

Good nomination! I'll vote for Kopcha if he gets through.

I missed the deadline, but I nominated McBride last year (before Chris' book, so I was happy to find an additional source of support for his candidacy especially given that he didn't get past the committee). I've nominated Dunn and Lumpkin (another player consistent with my handle) in the past, but they've both fallen off my list of 5.

I'm not too worried about Christensen - he's always on the ballot - just needs a few more votes from somewhere to put him over the top.

P.S. The book's list actually goes all the way out to 100 - lots of good players in the "Best of the Rest" section, but only the top 45 got a write-up, so I focussed on those. I don't think Cope made top 100.
