Radical draft picks/trades in retrospect...thoughts on who "won"?

Post by Bryan »

Using the historical lens, how would you evaluate the following three draft-related things:

1) Bucs trade 1st overall pick to Oilers...so it works out that

Oilers = Earl Campbell
Bucs = Jimmie Giles, Doug Williams, (Chuck Fusina, Reggie Lewis, Brett Moritz combine to play in 35 games with no starts).

2) Raiders use 1st round pick on Sebastian Janikowski....looking at the 2000 draft in retrospect, was it really that wonky of a pick?

3) Ditka and the Saints trade their entire draft for Ricky Williams...so

Saints = Ricky Williams

Skins = 1999 first round pick (12th overall, later traded to Chicago, used to select Cade McNown)
1999 third round pick (71st overall, later traded to Chicago, used to select D'Wayne Bates)
1999 fourth round pick (107th overall, used to select Nate Stimson)
1999 fifth round pick (144th overall, later traded to Chicago, used to select Khari Samuel)
1999 sixth round pick (179th overall, later traded to Denver, used to select Desmond Clark)
1999 seventh round pick (218th overall, later traded to Denver, used to select Billy Miller)
2000 first round pick (2nd overall, used to select LaVar Arrington)
2000 third round pick (64th overall, used to select Lloyd Harrison)

The Skins used the some of the 1999 Saints picks in trade packages to the Bears that allowed the Skins to draft Champ Bailey & Jon Jansen.

Nobody really won that Ricky Williams deal, especially since he would be off to Miami in a few years.

As for Janikowski, it's not surprising that Al Davis did that, but there were rumors at the time that he could have been deported, so it was a risk.

Washington wound up with Champ Bailey (after using some of the assets acquired from New Orleans to trade up with Chicago) and Lavar Arrington. They definitely won this trade.
