Game 11 1960 Eagles at Steelers

Week 11 1960 Philadelphia Eagles at Steelers at Forbes Field-Steelers win 27 to 21
Philadelphia had cliched the Eastern Conference title and was 9-1. The Steelers were 4-5-1 and had won their last two games. After losing the opening game, the Eagles won nine in a row.

First Quarter-Bobby Layne capped a drive with a six yard run and kicked the extra point for a 7 to 0 lead. John Henry Johnson ran seven yards for another touchdown and Layne was wide on the extra point.

Second Quarter-Behind a huge whole, John Henry Johnson ran 87 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest run in Steelers history. Steelers 20 Eagles 0. After that play, Layne passed for 15 yards to Buddy Dial for another score.

Pittsburgh stunned Philadelphia 27 to 0 at halftime and the third quarter was scoreless. The Eagles threw the Steelers a scare in the fourth quarter.

Buck Shaw put Sonny Jurgensen at quarter back since Norman Van Brocklin was having miserable day. It is a good thing for Pittsburgh Shaw didn’t do it earlier. Jurgensen’s presence energized the team.

Timmy Brown ran 53 yards for a touchdown. Sonny threw a seven yard pass to Brown for another score. Closing this out, Jurgensen passed for 19 yards to Tommy McDonald. Final Steelers 27 Eagles 21

For the Eagles, Jurgensen was eight for 19 for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Timmy Brown caught three passes for 112 yards. Tommy McDonald caught four passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

For Pittsburgh, Bobby Layne was 12 for 18 for 163 yards and a touchdown. The Pittsburgh ground game really clicked with John Henry Johnson setting a Steeler record of 182 yards gained in a game. In addition, Tom Tracy gained 95 yards in 22 carries. Buddy Dial caught six passes for 163 yards and a touchdown.

Pittsburgh gained 275 yards on the ground to just 34 for the Eagles. With their late surge, the Eagles passed for 307 yards versus 209 for the Steelers.

Interception one for each player on both teams. Eagles had Don Burroughs, Jimmy Carr, and Chuck Weber. The Steelers had Dickie Moegle and Lowell Wren.
