1959 Pittsburgh Steelers III
Three Consecutive Victories-The first two games proved Bobby Layne was still good in the two minute drill.

Game 7 At Yankee Stadium Pittsburgh 14 New York Giants 9

With a great defense, the Steelers limited the Giants to three field goals and 197 yards. In the second period, Layne threw to Jimmy Orr a four yard touchdown pass. In the fourth quarter, Layne with 1:29 remaining, threw a 45 yard touchdown pass to Tom Tracy.

Game 8 at Cleveland The Steelers defeated the Browns 21 to 20

This was one of the most thrilling games I have ever seen. The 1959 season will always be special because the Steelers defeated the Browns twice. This is something they did not do until 1974, 15 years later. Cleveland was heavily favored having just defeated the Colts at Baltimore 38 to 31.

The Steelers jumped off to a14 to 0 lead in the first quarter with Tom Tracy plunging for four and one yard. Just before halftime, Milt Plum threw a 30 yard touchdown pass to Ray Renfro. Lou Groza missed the extra point which was costly. The third quarter was scoreless but the Plum to Renfro combo worked twice in the fourth quarter giving Cleveland a 20 to 14 lead.

Now it was time for Bobby Layne’s two minute drill. The Pittsburgh moved steadily, calmly, and cooly down to the Browns 18. Here Bobby Layne threw an 18 yard pass to Gern Nagler. The receiver used the goal post as a blocker. Final Steelers 21 Browns 20. Jimmy Brown gained 115 yards for Cleveland and Tom Tracy gained 99 yards for Pittsburgh.
