Though not a football player, longtime ESPN insider and broadcaster Chris Mortensen died as well. Mortensen was important in keeping NFL news relevent, interesting and even controversial during the offseason months, helping keep viewership high with the network until politics and too many talking heads started turning off viewers. He was the first to speculate that Brett Favre would or might retire after the death of his father, keeping viewers wondering every year if he would or wouldnt, which became basically a running joke but kept the public interested and talking during slow months.
