Stan White
Stan White
Low draft pick, started for 10 out of 11 years. Very impressive INT and sack statistics for a Colt team that was making the playoffs. Also started for 2 years in the NFL. Not a lot of honors and no Pro Bowls though. Opinions?

Re: Stan White
The Colts' defenses excelled in sacks and turning the ball over mostly, otherwise they were just an average defense and kind of got exposed in the playoffs. Still, White was getting more than his share of INT and sacks from 1975-77. Was that just a product of the system?JohnTurney wrote:also undersized---didn't weigh the 225 he was listed...prob 10 pounds less...Jay Z wrote:Low draft pick, started for 10 out of 11 years. Maxie Baughan became the DC in 1975. The sacks and picks went up. 78-79 pretty much the same guys but the defense went downhill. Not having Bert Jones and the offense isn't on the field as much, hurt some.Jay Z wrote:The Colts' defenses excelled in sacks and turning the ball over mostly, otherwise they were just an average defense and kind of got exposed in the playoffs. George Allen's system was installed in 75... and average secondary play was covered with "jet" techniqueJay Z wrote:

by DL and dogs by LBers...sacks were just part of Baughan calling aggressively vs right protections but I think the
picks were just White's ability to read and react ... I mean he'd have to alternate between coverage
and dogs on passing downs...
Some of the sacks I've seen were on an OX stunt, coordinated with the RDE where he'd go inside
the RDT and RDE rather than the outside...that was an Allen fav. Maybe Baughan liked that from
when he was a Ram and liked it for Hanburger--just guessing.
I think the picks were just heady play by White...probably didn't drop them when they came to him
and got in good position...
also ... will amend "10 pounds less" to maybe 5 pounds less...215 seems too small...I'd guess
around 220

Re: Stan White
A good career very similar to former Colt Don Shinnick, the all-time interception leader amongst linebackers ... When George Allen did color for CBS he said on air he liked White's play and experience when White and the Lions were on tv ...
Re: Stan White
Always thought it was interesting who George Allen would 'acquire' for his defense....same with Don Coryell and who he would bring in for his offense. Allen brought in White for the Chicago Blitz in the USFL, so he must have seen something in White's play that was extraordinary. Maybe its just coincidence, but it interesting that Don Shinnick was the weakside LB for many years, and then White kind of took over that spot and was a very similar player. White had a very long professional football career despite his athletic limitations, and he was also the worst coin flip person in USFL history.

Funny both Brian and Bryan mention Shinnick a minute apart.

White played for Maxie Baughan in Baltimore and with the Lions...when USFL startedBrian wolf wrote:Haha ... George Allen too ... I didnt know White played for the Blitz.
Allen was a coach there and Baughan went to Cornell--so there is a couple layers
of connection there...Allen loved vets...knew White from covering games and
from knowing Baughan.
White knew the scheme like the back of his hand...called the signals for Baughanin Balt
and Det...
White, as mentioned, didn't blitz a ton, but when the right protection showed he'd
have the ability to be aggressive and call it..almost a "blitz the formation" or "blitz the protection"
kind of thing. If it was the kind of look they wanted to blitz they'd do it. And it was probably
a high percentage of "hits". So you can get more sacks in fewer blitzes when the right look is there,
And as far as coverages, I just think, just speculating, that White was just good at it. he could read
things, was a college TE, smart...more nimble and quick than big...maybe 220 or so pounds, maybe
220-222 or whatever.
Regardless of what was going on averaging 6 picks and 6 sacks over a 3 year period is special.
It's hard for a 4-3 OLber to get either one of those in a year ... or to average that number over
three years...and to do both--he's got to be only one...In fact, 99% sure he is.
Then, the numbers drop... teams get wise? D not as effective? Dropped a pick here and there.
Blitzing the same and not getting to QB? Just don't know..maybe some of all of that and
other things not thinking of.
